Sometimes the impact of a meal extends far beyond the moment it is served.
St. Jude Outreach recently received a deeply personal message from Michael Eric Burnside, who shared memories of visiting St. Jude years ago with his late friend, Michael Joseph.
Michael recalled relying on community services during a period when he was building his own tiny home, and he expressed gratitude for the people and organizations who dedicate themselves to serving those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
In memory of his friend Michael Joseph, Michael has created a handmade Michael Joseph Homeless Award ’25 and has offered to present one to Sister Beth Mouch and St. Jude Outreach, along with a personal honorarium.
He wrote:
“I am extremely thankful for those God has called to help the least of us. It would give me real joy to present you with a single handmade trophy.”
Michael also shared his hope that his own 176-square-foot tiny home might someday offer inspiration for additional housing solutions for people experiencing homelessness.
Messages like Michael’s are a reminder that the work of St. Jude Outreach is about much more than food. A meal can provide nourishment, dignity, encouragement and a moment of stability when someone needs it most.
We are grateful to Michael for sharing his story, for remembering his friend in such a meaningful way, and for recognizing the people who have supported St. Jude Outreach throughout the years.
